Maharashtra seeks information about plots available for lease in seven cantonments
PUNE: The government’s Municipal Administration Office in the state wants to know more about seven cantonment areas, like Pune and Khadki, to see if they can be used for business or leased out after they merge with nearby cities. They’re also asking about things like what facilities there are, how much stuff they have, how many people work there, how much money they have, and what people think about the merger. Apart from Pune and Khadki, there are cantonment areas in Dehu Road in Pune, Bhingar in Ahmednagar, Deolali in Nashik, Kamptee in Nagpur, and Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar).
“We asked for this information to make the merging process smoother. We talked about it before, but we didn’t decide anything. Last year, Deolali and Aurangabad wanted to merge,” said a big boss from the Municipal Administration Office. The boss of the Municipal Administration Office, Manoj Ranade, didn’t answer calls or texts on Monday. Some big people from the cantonment boards told TOI that the government wanted to know about a lot of things before.
“The special thing about cantonments is there are empty spaces that will belong to the government after they merge. The Municipal Administration Office wants to know about these spaces to see how much money they can make,” they added.
Most of these empty spaces are near army places, like in Pune and Khadki. “Also, there are parts where regular people live, like in Pune Cantonment. They are good spots near important army places. When they become part of the city, the army won’t control how big buildings can be. So, the cantonment people need to pick which areas will join the city,” said another big person from the cantonment. Pune Cantonment has about 250 acres of these areas in eight parts, and Khadki has about 150 acres.
Rajabhau Chavan, a person who works to help people in the Pune cantonment, said, “The cantonment people need to listen to what regular people think and take it seriously. The merge will change things for everyone in the cantonment. They need to tell people what they think about it.”
