The Pimpri Chinchwad civic authority takes action against 1,012 property owners for tax defaults.
In Pune, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken action against 1,012 properties for not paying property taxes this year. They told TOI that they sealed 346 properties, gave notices to 538 owners to take away their properties and cut water connections to 128 places in 2023-24. The PCMC officials want to do the same to about 500 more places by March 31, 2024, and are asking people to pay their overdue taxes to avoid this.
The PCMC tax department folks said they’ll take action like sealing and taking away property from places with more than Rs50,000 in overdue taxes. There are 6.15 lakh registered properties, including homes, businesses, and industries in Pimpri Chinchwad. This year, they got Rs746 crore in property taxes from 4.31 lakh property owners. Most defaulters are in residential areas, and many can afford to pay but haven’t.
In the current financial year, 1,82,665 homeowners and 35,000 properties, including businesses and industries, haven’t paid taxes. PCMC’s assistant municipal commissioner Nilesh Deshmukh said they aim to collect Rs1,000 crore this year and are using social media to ask people to pay. Ward offices are cutting water and taking property from defaulters daily. They’ll also act against those who haven’t paid taxes for 8-10 years despite having money.
More than 450 homes owe taxes for over five years, including 100 who haven’t paid for more than 10 years. They’re looking to auction these properties and have received interest from three government valuers. This legal auction process will start soon. People should pay their dues to avoid losing their property, warns Pradeep Jambhale Patil, additional municipal commissioner, PCMC.
